Our Work in NCD

MAMTA Health Institute for Mother and Child has been a pioneer in addressing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in India since the early 2010s, integrating prevention, screening, and management into community and health system frameworks. Today, its interventions span diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and mental health, with innovative models like youth clinics, workplace programs, and digital health tools. In the endeavour for addressing NCDs in the communities Nutrition, Physical Actives and Gender Equity are the enablers.

  • Early Engagement (2011 onwards): MAMTA recognized the growing burden of NCDs in India and began designing integrated intervention models aligned with national and global health strategies.
  • Adolescent Focus: Since many NCD risk factors originate in adolescence, MAMTA partnered with Lund University (Sweden) and state governments to embed NCD risk prevention into adolescent reproductive and sexual health programs.
    • Established 15 youth clinics and trained 120 healthcare professionals to deliver preventive services.
  • Continuum of Care Approach: MAMTA emphasized linking maternal and child health services with NCD prevention, ensuring a life-course perspective.

Latest Interventions

  • Community Engagement: Programs across 400 villages, 200 urban wards, 100 schools, and 50 workplaces have empowered over 700,000 adolescents and adults with health promotion and self-care management strategies.
  • HealthRise Project (Shimla, Himachal Pradesh):
    • Targets individuals aged 15–70 at risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
    • Includes population-based risk assessments, behavior change communication, and community mobilization.
    • Uses technology such as mHealth apps for disease literacy and e-clinics for virtual consultations.
  • Integration with Primary Health Systems: MAMTA collaborates with state governments to strengthen screening, referral, and treatment pathways for diabetes and hypertension.
  • Rare Diseases & NCD Linkages: Through partnerships with the Indian Academy of Pediatrics, MAMTA also addresses rare diseases in children, aligning with the National Rare Disease Policy 2021.
